Supreme Court Rejects Plea Seeking President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh

"How many states have you studied crime records. Show us what basis. There is no research about what you are saying. How is your fundamental right getting affected," Chief Justice of India, S.A. Bobde

On Monday, the Apex Court of India rejected a plea seeking imposition of President's rule in Uttar Pradesh under Article 356 of the Indian Constitution.

The petitioner's advocate CR Jaya Sukin brought forward the following points in support of her client's request for imposing president's rule in the State of Uttar Pradesh.

  • Discrimination against minorities
  • Rising crimes against Dalits
  • Breakdown of law and order

The learned counsel also made references to State action in Hathras case, extrajudicial killings, atrocities by police in prison cells, restrictions on reporting of crimes against minorities.

"The imposition of Article 356 in Uttar Pradesh is necessary to save Indian democracy and lives of 20 crore people."- claims the petitioner.

However, Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde questioned the petitioner's research in support of his arguments and rejected the plea.
