SC Closes Wrestlers' Plea In Sexual Harassment Case

The petitioners had sought an FIR, but the court noted that one had already been registered, fulfilling their request

The Supreme Court of India has dismissed the case filed by three female wrestlers who have represented India in prestigious international events. The court acknowledged that Delhi Police has filed complaints against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), regarding allegations of sexual harassment.

The petitioners had sought an FIR, but the court noted that one had already been registered, fulfilling their request. The court allowed the petitioners to pursue further action through the jurisdictional magistrate or by using Section 482 of the CrPC if they have any additional complaints.

Senior Advocate Narender Hooda, representing the petitioners, asked the bench to oversee the investigation, citing the Delhi Police's failure to act until the Supreme Court intervened. However, the bench rejected this request and instead granted the petitioners the freedom to seek alternative remedies.

The bench further mentioned in its ruling that the Delhi Police had taken the minor complainant's statement on April 29 and those of four others on May 3. It added that the police are in the process of recording their statements before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. The ruling also made note of the statements made by the police regarding the security measures put in place for the complainants.
