Prisoners Released In Covid-19 On Parole Directed To Surrender In 15 Days By The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar on Friday ordered the prisoners who were released on Covid- 19 parole to surrender within a period of 15 days. A high powered committed had earlier released them on parole during the global pandemic.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar on Friday ordered the prisoners who were released on Covid- 19 parole to surrender within a period of 15 days. A high powered committed had earlier released them on parole during the global pandemic.

During the Coronavirus pandemic waves of 2020 and 2021 in India, the apex court considered the issue of overcrowding of jails and hence granted an emergency parole to the prisoners through a series of orders that they passed in suo motu cases.

This high power committee comprised of the following:

1) Principal Secretary (Home) of government of NCT of Delhi

2) Director General (Prisons), Delhi

3) Member Secretary, Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA)

The bench on Friday observed that the prisoners and convicts released on emergency parole as pe the recommendations of the high power committee in accordance with the orders of the apex court have to surrender before the concerned prison authorities in 15 days.
