Jadavpur University Sets Precedence In Demarcating Gender-neutral Washrooms In English And IR Departments

The Head of the Department of English, Dr. Manojit Mandal expressed his happiness after implementing the initiative

Just few weeks after the historical same-sex marriage proceedings have taken place at the Supreme Court, Jadavpur University has recently set a precedence by demarcating two gender-neutral washrooms, one in the English Department and the other in the Department of International Relations(IR). This comes after a prolonged demand for the same by the LGBTQIA+ community in the University, the idea being supported by the Union and the other Students alike. With this, the identity of the Community have been strengthened inside the premises and their grievances have been addressed.

The Head of the Department of English, Dr. Manojit Mandal expressed his happiness after implementing the initiative. He said, "The campus belongs to everyone. We have taken the initiative keeping in mind the requirements of everyone." The Registrar of the University, Snehamanju Basu, mentioned that such washrooms shall be set up in every block of the University, across all faculties.

At the IR Department, another washroom has been designated as gender-neutral. The students have placed their demands earlier and wanted to ensure that such washrooms can be accessible to all. This is only a step in the direction. Though, there have been certain conflicting posts on the social media pertaining to the conditions of the washroom in elite State run Universities like Jadavpur University, most of the social media community have placed their faith that such initiative are a positive move in the direction.

At Calcutta University, the Pro Vice-Chancellor Asis Chatterjee had spoken to the media and ensured that the College Street Campus of the University will soon have such gender-neutral washrooms. Such a washroom even exists on the premises of Presidency University, but it has not been stipulated like in the case of JU.

A PhD scholar in the Department of English (who did not wish to be named) said, " This is a beginning of such initiatives and I whole-heartedly thank the administration for addressing the issues with the first step in the direction. We hope they would cooperate further in making the University a very welcoming and inclusive space."
